Note on the Future of Design Leadership
“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like – design is how it works. Design leadership is how to make people, ideas, and systems work together.”
Design is no longer a function relegated to the end of the process or the surface of the product or service. Today, it has the potential to sit at the heart of transformation. From reimagining healthcare systems to shaping climate-positive consumer goods, design has become a key lever for innovation, growth, and social change.
As the role of design has expanded, so too has the role of the design leader.
Gone are the days when leading design meant managing teams of creatives and ensuring visual consistency. The future design leader must connect across disciplines, navigate complexity, and inspire trust, not just within design teams, but across entire organisations. They must move seamlessly between creative vision, business value, and human connection.
In practice, this means being able to:
• Reframe problems and envision new futures
• Translate ideas into strategic and commercial value
• Build trust, alignment, and momentum in complex human systems
These forces appear repeatedly in our work with design leaders and form the backbone of the PARK Design Leadership Academy. We describe them as three core dimensions of design leadership – Creative Intelligence, Business Intelligence & Emotional Intelligence.
Our PARK Design Leadership Academy is the global platform for future design leaders who want to excel in Creative Intelligence, Business Intelligence & Emotional Intelligence. We teach within this framework the needed capabilities for designers to sustain and have maximum impact on business, people and the environment. It’s a highly interactive and challenge based training format with a small group to give you the best individual guidance as possible.
2.500 Alumni have been enjoying our PARK Academy and have successfully developed in their career from designer or design manager into a design leader. In Estonia we have run three cohorts now and we are looking forward to welcome you to our fourth cohort in collaboration with the Estonian Design Centre, starting March 16th/17th.
